Life’s a Beach—Until Murder Rolls in With the Tide

A 50-million-dollar salvage operation. An expert diver dead at the bottom of the sea. An elegant mermaid in a black Porsche—and an open invitation to dip into the troubled waters of her marriage. Cape Cod’s Aristotle “Soc” Socarides, part-time fisherman, part-time private eye, is swimming with the sharks. Only problem is, he’s the bait…and blood is beginning to boil to the surface.

Soc didn’t think he could get in much deeper, but he’d better think again. A family debt of honor comes due—a debt only he can settle—plunging him into the middle of a lethal search for buried treasure. Now Soc’s about to discover how deadly the Cape’s currents can be. Snarled in a net of smuggling, treachery, and revenge, he’s finding out that no matter how far down you go, nothing’s harder to salvage than the truth.

Hearn's ( Bad August ) absorbing new hard-boiled mystery follows PI Joe Noonan as he looks up a few old friends--but pk what he learns about the inner workings of Animal Farm, a '60s commune, is far from a nostalgia trip. Consumer rights advocate Evan Mattingly has hired Noonan to find Lenny Byrd, a mutual acquaintance from their college days. When Mattingly is murdered, Noonan decides to continue the search. His first stop is Alex Cutler, a record company president who is cleaner and much richer than when he belonged to Animal Farm. Cutler claims to have lost touch with the old crowd, but Noonan learns that Mattingly was investigating Cutler's company; with a bit more digging, he discovers that when Animal Farm burned to the ground in 1970, one member, Kevin Moon, died. At this point Noonan receives a letter, postmarked Los Angeles, that contains $1000 in cash and says "talk to Lenny Byrd." The typed signature reads Kevin Moon. Thus Noonan "now had two clients and they were both dead men." Some ex-commune members have indeed kept in touch, it seems, and Animal Farm's (and thus Moon's) demise wasn't quite accidental.

Neal Carey is not your usual private eye. A graduate student at Columbia University, he grew up on the streets of New York, usually on the wrong side of the law. Then he met Joe Graham, a one-armed P.I. who introduced him to the Bank, an exclusive New England institution with a sideline in keeping its wealthy clients happy and out of trouble. They pay Neal's college tuition, and Neal gets an education that can't be found in any textbook-- from learning how to trail a suspect to mastering the proper way to search a room.

Now its payback time. The Bank wants Neal to put his skills to work in finding Allie Chase, the rebellious teenage daughter of a prominent senator. The problem: Allie has gone underground in London, and to get her back, Neal has to follow her into the punk scene, a violent netherworld where drugs run rampant and rage is the name of the game. Up against punk junkies, antique book thieves, and murderous betrayal, Neal has his work cut out for him to save Allie-- and get back above ground for good.
