The leading professor of rhetoric in Rome received 100,000 sesterces a year. At exactly the same time, a Christian bishop in Rome was receiving only 7,000 sesterces a year. To all appearances, his group was dwarfed by the robust edifice of classical public life; he was an incomprehensible emigrant in a great city, like Karl Marx in Victorian London.
