Laon and Cythna

  • The Selected Poetry & Prose of Shelley
Shelley's short, prolific life produced some of the most memorable and well-known lyrics of the Romantic period. But he was also the most radical writer in the English literary tradition of his day, a fiery political visionary committed to social change and progress.
The generous selection in this volume represents the wide range of his writing, both poetry and prose. Arranged chronologically, the accompanying introductory essays set Shelley's works in their historical, social and political context. They provide a vivid insight into the life and times of this volcanic spirit whose inspiring voice called on the people of England to:
    'Rise like lions after slumber
    In unvanquishable number;
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you.
Ye are many, they are few.'
    (The Mask of Anarchy)

  • Zastrozzi and St. Irvyne
Zastrozzi was written by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) at age of 17 during his last year at Eton,
and it was published in 1810 when he was at Oxford. In the first edition, he was identified on the title page only by his initials. In
St. Irvyne, published shortly afterward, he was identified as "A Gentleman of the University of Oxford." Both novels are of interest today as early artifacts of the age of the Gothic horror novel—the era that not long afterwards produced the magnificent Frankenstein
    by Shelley's wife Mary.
A brief but complex tale of romance and revenge, Zastrozzi

    —like its companion, St. Irvyne
    — was praised by some critics and derided by others. Both stories manifest the creative flair of their young author, who went on to become one of the greatest poets in the English language during his short life.

It has the usual ardour of his tone, the unbounded sensibility by which he combines the most domestic with the most remote and fanciful images, as well as his signature patience. This volume is highly recommended for all poetry-lovers, and is a must-read for fans of Shelley's work. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.
