Quelques décennies après la catastrophe de Fukushima, Yoshirô, un écrivain plus que centenaire, élève seul Mumei, son arrière-petit-fils, encore à l’école primaire. Se dessine alors en creux une réflexion sur l’étrangeté de leur langue maternelle, et sur la porosité entre les langues.
Non sans rappeler "Le Meilleur des mondes", ou "1984", ce roman décrit, à sa façon singulière, les conséquences des dysfonctionnements du monde dans lequel nous vivons.

I en närliggande framtid, i efterdyningarna av en stor katastrof, har Japan isolerat sig från omvärlden. Barnen är så svaga att de knappt kan gå, medan de äldre tycks odödliga. Här lever pojken Mumei med sin gammelmorfar Yoshiro. Mumei är sjuklig och svag, men ändå omgivningens ljus och hopp.

The Bridegroom Was a Dog is perhaps the Japanese-German writer Yoko Tawada’s most famous story. Its initial publication in 1998 garnered admiration from The New Yorker, who praised it as, “fast-moving, mysteriously compelling tale that has the dream quality of Kafka.”


The Bridegroom Was a Dog begins with a schoolteacher telling a fable to her students. In the fable, a princess promises her hand in marriage to a dog that has licked her bottom clean. The story takes an even stranger twist when that very dog appears to the schoolteacher in real life as a dog-like man. They develop a very sexual, romantic courtship with many allegorical overtones — much to the chagrin of her friends.

Drei Eisbären, Großmutter, Mutter und Sohn, erzählen ihre Geschichte. Sie sind Migranten, die Älteste lebte in Moskau und emigrierte nach Westdeutschland und dann nach Kanada, ihre Tochter kommt von dort in die DDR und arbeitete im Zirkus und deren Sohn wird im Berliner Zoo geboren – inzwischen ist der Mauerfall schon lange her – und auf der ganzen Welt bekannt.

In Yoko Tawadas Texten gehen Traumebenen und Realität vergnügt ineinander über. Kleine Details beleuchten scheinbar Selbstverständliches aus unserem Alltag in neuem Licht. Mythen aus verschiedenen Teilen der Welt – zum Beispiel, dass Bären Seelen von Menschen rauben – werden ebenso lebendig wie zeithistorische Realität.

Der Roman lässt sich zeitgeschichtlich, politisch und philosophisch lesen. Oder einfach als unterhaltsame Tiergeschichte; als Persiflage auf Migrantenliteratur.

A precocious Vietnamese high school student ― known as the pupil with “the iron blouse”―in Ho Chi Minh City is invited to an International Youth Conference in East Berlin. But, in East Berlin, as she is preparing to present her paper in Russian on “Vietnam as a Victim of American Imperialism,” she is abruptly kidnapped and taken to a small town in West Germany. After a strange spell of domestic-sexual boredom with her lover-abductor―and though “the Berlin Wall was said to be more difficult to break through than the Great Wall of China” ― she escapes on a train to Moscow . . . but mistakenly arrives in Paris.
