"Die Herren der Welt" umfasst die wichtigsten Essays und Reden Chomskys aus einer fast 50-jährigen Schaffensperiode, die sich mit der Natur der Staatsmacht und deren ideologischen Grundlagen vom «Kalten Krieg» bis zum «Krieg gegen den Terror» befassen. In seinen Fokus gerät dabei auch die internationale Gerichtsbarkeit als Instrument zur Durchsetzung einer ungerechten Weltordnung.

Die meisten der hier vorliegenden Beiträge sind erstmals auf Deutsch und zeitgleich mit der englischsprachigen Ausgabe in Buchform erhältlich. Das titelgebende Zitat stammt vom schottischen Ökonomen Adam Smith (1723-1790), der in seinem Werk «Der Wohlstand der Nationen» ausführte: «Alles für uns und nichts für die anderen – das ist offenbar schon von jeher die üble Maxime der Herren der Welt.» Chomsky zerpflückt die Argumente dieser Herren und ihrer Herrschaftspraktiken mit unerbittlicher Logik und zerstört die Mythen derjenigen, die Macht und Privilegien einiger weniger gegen die Interessen und Nöte der Mehrheit absichern.

In this impressive book, Edward S. Herman and David Peterson examine the uses and abuses of the word “genocide.” They argue persuasively that the label is highly politicized and that in the United States it is used by the government, journalists, and academics to brand as evil those nations and political movements that in one way or another interfere with the imperial interests of U.S. capitalism. Thus the word “genocide” is seldom applied when the perpetrators are U.S. allies (or even the United States itself), while it is used almost indiscriminately when murders are committed or are alleged to have been committed by enemies of the United States and U.S. business interests. One set of rules applies to cases such as U.S. aggression in Vietnam, Israeli oppression of Palestinians, Indonesian slaughter of so-called communists and the people of East Timor, U.S. bombings in Serbia and Kosovo, the U.S. war of “liberation” in Iraq, and mass murders committed by U.S. allies in Rwanda and the Republic of Congo. To create Requiem for the American Dream , Chomsky and his editors, the filmmakers Peter Hutchison, Kelly Nyks, and Jared P. Scott, spent countless hours together over the course of five years, from 2011 to 2016. After the release of the film version, Chomsky and the editors returned to the many hours of tape and transcript and created a document that included three times as much text as was used in the film.
