In our turbulent times, we cannot predict what tomorrow will look like. But we know that tomorrow depends on what all of us do today. That is why we have no right to be pessimistic. This is the main argument made by Anne Applebaum and Donald Tusk in this book, a collection of conversations about the most important choices facing Poland, Europe and the world.

In twelve conversations, Applebaum and Tusk delve into a series of difficult questions:
Why is the European Union, one of the world's greatest economic powers, so weak on the world stage? Why have so many democratically elected leaders headed down an authoritarian path? How did our countries divide into tribes, and can the gaps between people be healed? How can we make sure that "decency" does not become the equivalent of helplessness and "xenophobia" does not become a synonym for effectiveness in the face of a migration crisis that will only grow? Can we win the idea of patriotism back from the nationalists? Why does Russia want to divide Europe? Will China win the digital battle for world dominance? How are democrats going to win elections again - not just in America? Applebaum and Tusk search for answers, cominbing their analysis with stories and anecdotes about Joe Biden, Viktor Orban, Boris Johnson, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, Vladimir Putin, Jarosław Kaczyński.

These unique conversations reflect two very different perspectives, that of an outstanding journalist and author of history books, and that of a seasoned practitioner who has to put political ideas into practice.

In the years just before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall, people from across the political spectrum in Europe and America celebrated a great achievement, felt a common purpose and, very often, forged personal friendships. Yet over the following decades the euphoria evaporated, the common purpose and centre ground gradually disappeared, extremism rose once more and eventually - as this book compellingly relates - the relationships soured too.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author, professor, and historian offers an expert guide to understanding the appeal of the strongman as a leader and an explanation for why authoritarianism is back with a menacing twenty-first century twist. Across the world today, from the Americas to Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege while populism and nationalism are on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum offers an unexpected explanation: that there is a deep and inherent appeal to authoritarianism, to strongmen, and, especially, to one-party rule--that is, to political systems that benefit true…

From the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Gulag and the National Book Award finalist Iron Curtain, a revelatory history of one of Stalin's greatest crimes

In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization—in effect a second Russian revolution—which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least 5 million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem. In Red Famine, Anne Applebaum argues that more than 3 million of those dead were Ukrainians who perished not because they were accidental victims of a bad policy but because the state deliberately set out to kill them.

Applebaum proves what has long been suspected: after a series of rebellions unsettled the province, Stalin set out to destroy the Ukrainian peasantry. The state sealed the republic's borders and seized all available food. Starvation set in rapidly, and people ate anything: grass, tree bark, dogs, corpses. In some cases, they killed one another for food. Devastating and definitive, Red Famine captures the horror of ordinary people struggling to survive extraordinary evil.

This second volume of the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia is an essential companion to the critically acclaimed first volume. It features previously unpublished drawings and photographs from the extraordinary archives of Danzig Baldaev and Sergei Vasiliev.
During his lifetime as a guard in St Petersburg's notorious Kresty Prison, Baldaev diligently recorded over three thousand criminals' tattoos and their coded meanings. His drawings form a unique gallery; a passport into a hidden world of shovel-faced politicians, skeletons pushing wheelbarrows, salami-wielding prostitutes, fornicating devils, messages tangled in barbed wire and monkeys in uniform. Tattoos on hands, feet, legs, torsos, foreheads, eyelids, buttocks and genitals all take their place in this fascinating document of a rapidly disappearing criminal society, where history, status and even sexual preference are indelibly etched on the body.
With an introduction by Anne Applebaum, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Gulag: A History. time and what a vast difference it all made for Louise Brooks, Cora Carlisle, and others like them.

At the end of the Second World War, the Soviet Union unexpectedly found itself in control of a huge swathe of territory in Eastern Europe. Stalin and his secret police set out to convert a dozen radically different countries to a completely new political and moral system: Communism. Anne Applebaum's landmark history of this brutal time shows how societies were ruthlessly eviscerated by Communist regimes, how opposition was destroyed and what life was like for ordinary people who had to choose whether to fight, to flee or to collaborate.
"Iron Curtain" is an exceptional work of historical and moral reckoning, and a haunting reminder of how fragile freedom can be.

    Год издания: 2012
    Издательство: Yale University Press
    Язык: Английский
A unique anthology of Gulag memoirs, edited and annotated by Pulitzer Prize–winning author Anne Applebaum

Anne Applebaum wields her considerable knowledge of a dark chapter in human history and presents a collection of the writings of survivors of the Gulag, the Soviet concentration camps. Although the opening of the Soviet archives to scholars has made it possible to write the history of this notorious concentration camp system, documents tell only one side of the story. Gulag Voices now fills in the other half.

The backgrounds of the writers reflect the extraordinary diversity of the Gulag itself. Here are the personal stories of such figures as Dmitri Likhachev, a renowned literary scholar; Anatoly Marchenko, the son of illiterate laborers; and Alexander Dolgun, an American citizen. These remembrances—many of them appearing in English for the first time, each chosen for both literary and historical value—collectively spotlight the strange moral universe of the camps, as well as the relationships that prisoners had with one another, with their guards, and with professional criminals who lived beside them.

A vital addition to the literature of this era, annotated for a generation that no longer remembers the Soviet Union, Gulag Voices will inform, interest, and inspire, offering a source for reflection on human nature itself.
