Demnach müsse der Einzelne soziale Verantwortung übernehmen, gleichzeitig solle Schwachen -- „Working Poor“ und zunehmend Familien -- besser geholfen werden. Wirft Reinhard Marx Karl Marx vor, “den Menschen vergessen” zu haben, meint er damit sicher auch seine Religiosität. Wenn der Bischof die von Max Horkheimer und Theodor W. Adorno verfasste Dialektik der Aufklärung durch Johannes Paul II. fortgeführt sieht, drohen seine Argumente allerdings zu vereinnahmen.
Sicher gehört Reinhard Marx zu den aufgeschlossenen Kirchenmännern, die mit Freude Fenster öffnen, um frischen Wind hinein zu lassen. Dabei sind seine Standpunkte im einzelnen nicht revolutionär. Vielmehr begeistert der Bischof damit, dass er ohne Wegzuducken viele drängende Probleme der Zeit klar benennt sowie aufrichtig, ja fast kämpferisch nach Gerechtigkeit und Frieden strebt. So könnte Reinhard Marx als Gegner des ungebremsten Kapitalismus wie folgt manifestieren: Soziale Markwirtschaftler aller Länder, vereinigt Euch!
